Planning Next Year's Security Budget

Developing a security program budget allows you to closely examine your current security program and recognize any gaps and develop plans to close those gaps. This exercise will naturally help you recognize and focus on the areas that matter most and build a better security program to keep you, your people, and your property protected.

When budgeting for an access control project you need to consider how you will use the system to allow both visitors and employees to access your space. You should think about how people will enter, where they will move throughout the space, and where they will exit.

  • A key component of Access Control systems is the type of credential you will use. You will have to decide what credential to give to the users to allow access. (examples include key fobs, photo badge and technological applications.)

  • Will your system be at one location or multiples? Stand alone systems that do not connect to other sites require less programming and set-up than a system that controls multiple sites.

When budgeting for your surveillance system remember to consider how you can use the technology to deter and capture events. The utilization of the right Video Management System for you and your security team could be priceless in many cases.

  • Storage is a big factor in video surveillance. How long will you need to keep your footage? The more storage you need, the more expensive it will be.

  • What type of camera are you going to want/need? Cameras that can pan, tilt, or zoom based on your control are typically more costly than those that have a fixed view.

  • Camera placement also plays a role in the budget. Outdoor cameras do cost more sometimes than indoor cameras because they have to be more resilient.

A few last things to consider…..If your new system can be installed during normal working hours it will be less expensive than after hours or weekends. Also, Did you know that investing in securing your facility will lower your insurance premiums? Can you reallocate those funds to your expenses?
